Skokie Kitchen

Year

2023

This kitchen was all about making the absolute most out of a small, cramped space and turning it into a place where our client — an avid gardener and passionate cook — can create magic for her family. I can personally attest that the tastes and smells coming out of this kitchen are truly top notch! We're currently working on another project for this client, and I recently told her I only wish the photos could capture the incredible smells coming from this space — they're that good.

This small kitchen was designed to feel open, connected, and deeply personal. The window over the sink overlooks the client’s garden, offering a calming view and a daily source of inspiration. We wanted to maintain that sense of openness throughout the space, both visually and functionally.

Although open shelving can be an unexpected choice in a compact kitchen, we incorporated it intentionally. The client enjoys having meaningful objects on display, and the open shelves allow her to see and access the things that bring her joy. At the same time, removing upper cabinets in key areas helped reduce visual weight and made the space feel brighter and more expansive.

One of the most impactful changes we made was relocating the dining room doorway. By moving it from the far corner to the end of the cabinet run, we were able to add a full-height pantry cabinet where the doorway previously stood. This reconfiguration maximized storage and improved flow, making the kitchen feel both more spacious and more intuitive to use.

This kitchen was such a fun collaboration with these amazing and fun clients!

When space is limited, getting the function right is essential—but equally important is a cohesive design that makes the room feel both beautiful and highly usable.
